Taslim Jamal: Beyond Borders
8월 8일, E.N. Gallery와 Mukesh Art Gallery가 공동으로 개최하는 《Beyond Borders》 타슬림 자말(Taslim Jamal)의 개인전이 시작됩니다. 이번 전시는 단순히 인도 현대미술을 서울에 소개하는 것을 넘어, 예술을 통해 인도와 한국 사이의 문화적 대화와 교류를 확장하고 서로 다른 삶의 경험 속에서 발견되는 보편적인 감정과 가치를 조명하고자 합니다.
타슬림 자말은 인도 라자스탄주 반스와라(Banswara)의 파르타푸르(Partapur) 마을에서 성장한 현대미술 작가입니다. 부족 문화와 풍부한 문화유산이 깊게 이어져 온 지역에서 성장한 그녀는 어린 시절 자신을 둘러싼 사람들, 동물, 자연 풍경, 그리고 삶 속의 기억과 감정으로부터 예술적 영감을 받아왔습니다.
자말의 작업은 부족 공동체의 삶을 단순히 기록하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에 존재하는 인간적인 감정과 관계의 깊이를 탐구합니다. 그녀는 일상의 소박한 순간들 속에서 가족과 공동체의 유대, 자연과 인간의 연결, 그리고 삶 속에 공존하는 어려움과 희망을 포착하며 이를 자신만의 시적인 시각 언어로 표현합니다.

작가는 아크릴, 오일, 목탄, 잉크뿐 아니라 에칭(etching), 우드컷(woodcut), 콜로그래프(collograph) 등 다양한 매체를 활용하며, 색채와 질감, 층위를 쌓아 올리는 방식으로 화면에 깊이와 생명력을 부여합니다. 강렬한 색채와 단순화된 형태, 유기적인 구성을 통해 그녀의 회화는 전통과 현대, 현실과 꿈, 개인과 공동체가 만나는 독창적인 세계를 보여줍니다.

On August 8, E.N. Gallery and Mukesh Art Gallery are pleased to present Beyond Borders, a solo exhibition by Taslim Jamal. Going beyond the introduction of Indian contemporary art in Seoul, this exhibition seeks to expand cultural dialogue and exchange between India and South Korea through art, highlighting the universal emotions and values that emerge from diverse experiences of life.
Taslim Jamal is a contemporary Indian artist from Partapur village in Banswara, Rajasthan, a region deeply rooted in tribal traditions and rich cultural heritage. Growing up surrounded by close-knit communities, natural landscapes, animals, and traditional ways of life, Jamal developed an artistic language inspired by personal memories, emotions, and observations of the world around her.
Rather than simply documenting tribal communities, Jamal’s work explores the emotional and human dimensions embedded within everyday life. Her paintings reflect the dignity of ordinary people, the bonds of family and community, and the profound relationship between humans and nature. Through a lens of simplicity and authenticity, she transforms familiar scenes into poetic visual narratives that reveal both the hardships and vitality of life.
Animals are recurring and significant elements in Jamal’s paintings. They are not merely representations of the natural world, but symbols of harmony, innocence, and a deeper connection between humans and nature. In her visual language, people, animals, trees, and village landscapes coexist within the same emotional space, suggesting a world beyond material concerns and social identities.
