Oh Youngjun’s solo exhibition, 지 오《知 吾》, opens this September at E.N. Gallery.
This exhibition presents the inner landscapes and personal journey that the artist has explored through years of introspection. We invite you to take your time with the works, where fragments of memory and impressions accumulate into richly layered images.
“Artists are people who wander throughout their lives in order to know themselves.”
For me, wandering is more than simply moving from one place to another. It is a journey of wandering through the depths of the self in search of who I am. For the past several years, my place of wandering has been “landscapes in memory.” Landscapes once encountered in reality have faded and blended with other memories over time, leaving behind impressions that are more vivid and uniquely my own. I have brought these fragments of memory and impression onto the canvas.
To express this, I use a “bundle-wire brush” that I make myself. Composed of 30 strands of wire and more than 90 joints, the brush holds paint and allows me to tap, layer, and scrape the canvas, creating a distinctive matière. The repeated gestures and layers of color become more than visual textures—they record the passage of time and the traces of my physical movement as I immerse myself in the process of painting.
Ultimately, the landscapes on the canvas are not simply representations of nature. They are the footprints I have left behind while losing and finding my way again in the studio—the whispers of the self I have endlessly searched for. Perhaps what I have been painting is not a landscape of the past, but one of a time yet to come.
I hope that those who join me on this journey of wandering will slowly wander through the rough textures and deep layers of color, and rediscover fragments of forgotten memories and impressions buried within themselves.
