조은아: 감미유경 甘美悠景

조은아 작가의 개인전 《감미유경 甘美悠景》이 10월 10일부터 11월 8일까지 이엔 갤러리에서 개최됩니다.

이번 전시에서 조은아 작가는 자연의 풍경과 달콤한 기억이 어우러진 자신만의 이상적 풍경을 선보입니다. 산과 물, 구름과 폭포가 펼쳐지는 전통적인 산수의 이미지 위에 디저트와 달콤한 기억을 떠올리게 하는 요소들을 더해, 현실의 특정 장소를 재현하기보다 마음속에 존재하는 평화롭고 행복한 풍경을 그려냅니다.

‘감미유경(甘美悠景)’은 달콤하고 아름다운 풍경이라는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

작가에게 풍경은 단순히 눈앞에 존재하는 자연의 모습을 옮기는 대상이 아닙니다. 오랜 시간 마음속에 남아 있는 자연의 이미지와 개인적인 기억, 그리고 그 안에서 느꼈던 감정이 서로 겹쳐지며 하나의 이상적인 풍경으로 다시 태어납니다. 익숙한 산수의 요소들은 현실의 장소에서 벗어나 기억과 상상의 공간으로 확장되고, 관람객은 그 안에서 저마다의 기억과 감정을 마주하게 됩니다.

특히 이번 작업에서 금빛의 표현은 전통적인 니금산수(泥金山水)의 미감을 현대적인 조형 언어로 재해석한 것입니다. 화면 위에 펼쳐지는 금빛과 색채, 산수의 형태는 서로 어우러지며 현실과 비현실의 경계에 있는 듯한 신비롭고 꿈같은 공간을 만들어냅니다.

작품 속 산과 물, 구름과 폭포는 자연을 있는 그대로 재현한 것이 아니라, 작가가 기억하고 상상하는 자연의 모습입니다. 여기에 달콤한 음식과 디저트를 연상시키는 이미지가 더해지면서 풍경은 더욱 따뜻하고 감각적인 공간으로 변화합니다. 이는 일상에서 마주하는 작고 달콤한 순간들, 그리고 그 순간들이 남긴 행복한 기억을 화면 안에 담아내려는 시도이기도 합니다.

조은아 작가가 그려낸 풍경은 특정한 장소가 아니라 누구나 마음속에 간직하고 있는 ‘좋았던 순간’의 풍경에 가깝습니다. 작품을 바라보는 동안 관람객이 잠시 현실에서 벗어나 자신만의 기억과 감정을 떠올리고, 평화와 행복, 그리고 달콤한 기억의 순간을 발견할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Jo Eun A’s solo exhibition, 甘美悠景 (Sweet and Beautiful Landscapes), will be held at E.N. Gallery from October 10 to November 8, 2026.

In this exhibition, Jo Eun A presents her distinctive landscapes where images of nature intertwine with sweet memories. Mountains, water, clouds, and waterfalls—elements rooted in the tradition of East Asian landscape painting—are brought together with imagery inspired by desserts and moments of sweetness. Rather than depicting specific places, the artist creates an ideal landscape that exists somewhere between memory, imagination, and emotion.

The title of the exhibition, 甘美悠景, refers to a landscape that is sweet, beautiful, and deeply evocative.

For Jo Eun A, a landscape is not simply something to be observed and reproduced. Images of nature that remain in the mind over time become intertwined with personal memories and emotions, eventually transforming into an idealized landscape of her own. Familiar elements of traditional landscape painting are released from their connection to any particular place and expanded into a space shaped by memory and imagination.

An important element of the artist’s practice is her reinterpretation of the traditional technique of nik-geum sansu (泥金山水), or landscape painting using gold. Through her distinctive visual language, gold interacts with color and form to create an enigmatic, dreamlike space that seems to exist between reality and another world.

The mountains, rivers, clouds, and waterfalls in her paintings are not direct representations of nature. Instead, they are reconstructed landscapes—nature as remembered, imagined, and emotionally experienced by the artist. Alongside these elements, imagery associated with sweets and desserts introduces a sense of warmth and pleasure, evoking the small moments of happiness and sweetness that remain in our memories.

The landscapes created by Jo Eun A are therefore not representations of particular places, but rather landscapes of moments—places that may exist within the memories of each of us. Through her paintings, the artist invites viewers to step away from the everyday for a moment, recall their own memories and emotions, and discover a sense of peace, happiness, and sweetness within the landscape.
